The More Things Change…
As we start the new year, we should reflect on our past to build the best possible future.
I love the beginning of everything, the beginning of the day, the beginning of a project, the beginning of a meal but especially the beginning of the year! It is one of my favorite times, as much as I don’t care for the winter, as soon as Christmas ends, I can’t help but get excited about the chance to refocus my house, my business and my health. The blank sheet of paper excites me, as it is a chance to create what you want.
Recently I was unpacking some items for a consignor, as I do every day. As I unwrapped one of her mother’s belongings, I noticed the paper her tea pot was wrapped in, was a newspaper from 1966. There was ad for “new” furniture. It was very intriguing to me as I am an expert in old “new” furniture. At ReFabulous, we re-sell furniture and home décor for people who just don’t have a use for it anymore. We continued to unwrap her items realizing each page was from a weekend edition of a local paper. The edition was focused on the new home design trends of the 60’s. How fun! I couldn’t wait to get the pages home to review the trends of that time. As I poured through the articles and the pictures of new furniture brands and styles, I couldn’t help to think, The more things change the more they stay the same. Are we really any different than we were in 1966? We all just want to make our home a reflection of what we care about and a place that comforts us.
The articles were fascinatingly similar to what we think about and read in design magazines/articles today. I know because I read these magazines every week. Yes, we are still interested in capturing the spirit of the current era of the time as well as bringing forward the comforts of memories of the past. Here at ReFabulous, we can especially appreciate how those things that some people are ready to let go of, can bring someone else a new joy and comfort. These new old items will provide perfect accent in their new living room design. If you haven’t heard, there is a new design trend in 2020 called, Grandmillennial (young people who want to add elements of design that remind them of Grandma). This specially named trend in 2020 is a reflection of the larger repetitive human nature experience based on our desire to capture the comfort of our traditional past and blend it into the excitement of our modern future. It is about balance. And I think we just can’t have enough of that…
So, as I get ready to start the new year of 2020, I have set my goals and I’m ready to focus on making them happen! BUT, most importantly, I will continue to focus on building our business to better serve the process of taking the old and making it new for someone else. As we facilitate one families’ ability to move their old prized china cabinet to the next families brand new dining room, I will remember how our things may change but the comfort those things bring, remains the same.
